A bizarre motor vehicle accident left nine injured and one fatality in north Toronto recently. In the dramatic incident, a TTC bus collided with a car northbound on Kipling. The bus then knocked out a pole and fire hydrant, crashed into a parked car and then drove into the front window of a CIBC bank branch before coming to a halt.
One of the passengers of the car was declared dead at the scene. Two passengers of the car along with the driver of the bus and six bus passengers were sent to hospital with varying injuries.
The police are investigating with their collision reconstruction scene and the points they will be looking at give clues as to possible causes:
- Debris marks on the road
- Light standards in the area
- Parked cars in the area
It Gets Complicated
It’s seldom “just” a case of who hit who. As the police investigation shows, there are many factors that can enter into the causes of a motor vehicle accident. Along with lighting and parked cars, other key points to consider include:
- General visibility – including signage, turns in the road, even vegetation that may obscure the view
- Road conditions – including weather conditions and the road itself
You can bet that any counsel representing other parties involved will also want to check on things like the bus driver’s experience and work record. The bus’s black box – which records driving data such as speeds, braking times and so on just like an airplane’s black box – is also under investigation to determine the exact sequence of events from behind the bus driver’s wheel. When public transit is involved, you can bet their lawyers are at work immediately to arrive at a solution that best protects the interests of their client.
