A horrific car accident west of the GTA underscores a roadside danger you may never have considered.
Earlier this month, a family of three found themselves stranded by the side of the highway near Kitchener. Just as the OPP were on their way to respond to the calls for a disabled vehicle, they began to get calls about a collision involving serious injuries – at the same location.
A couple in their thirties and their infant daughter were in or around the disabled car (it’s not clear if they were actually in the vehicle) when it was hit by a cube van as it stood beside the road. Tragically, the infant and mother were killed and the father was left with serious injuries.
People think they’re safe around their vehicle, even if it’s by the side of a busy highway. Everyone can see my car, right? But accidents involving disabled vehicles roadside are far more common than people suppose.
Safety Tip
If your vehicle is disabled by the side of the road, exercise extreme caution and try to get as far away from traffic as you can.
Who’s Looking Out For You?
A motor vehicle accident may be more or less serious but it doesn’t take a tragedy like this one to leave you with debilitating injuries.
Matters can become complicated. Different versions of events and various factors can make the outcome of any insurance or legal proceedings anything but clear cut. Your own legal representation will ensure that your interests are considered in any final arrangement.
In the case of injuries, you may not be – and probably won’t be – fully aware of the extent of your injuries immediately following an accident, even though the time you have to claim benefits is limited.
We Can Help
If you’ve been involved in a motor vehicle accident, you owe it to yourself to get professional help. Even if the injury seems minor, you should contact your insurance company and a motor vehicle accident lawyer right away. The severity of soft tissue injuries common to car accidents is often only apparent some time later. Since the time you have to file a suit is limited, you want to be safe rather than sorry.
