Earlier this spring, a man was involved in a horrific motor vehicle accident in the GTA.
The single father was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident at the end of March when the van he was driving crashed into a tree at an intersection in Scarborough. The van burst into flames and the unfortunate man was trapped for an unknown amount of time before rescuers could reach him. A passenger suffered lacerations but nothing like the driver’s injuries.
Luckily, two witnesses saw the accident and pulled him from the vehicle even before emergency personnel got there. However, his injuries were so extensive that both of his feet had to be amputated.
About a month later, he’s understandably still in hospital recovering from his injuries. Burn injuries are very painful and patients are typically kept under heavy sedation until significant healing can take place. The man’s three teenage daughters, aged between 11 and 16, have had to go stay with family friends.
Friends of the family have started an online fundraising campaign to help the family out and have managed to raise several thousand dollars. The expenses involved will be significant, including,
- Alterations to his home
- Alterations to his vehicle
- Prosthetics and other medical and rehab devices
A Sad Story
The details of his story are upsetting and raise many uncomfortable questions.
- What can happen to your day-to-day affairs in the case of severe injury?
- What can an injured person do while they’re heavily sedated in the hospital?
- How can children be properly looked after when a parent is severely injured like this?
No one should have to rely entirely on the goodwill of friends and family. Adequate auto insurance should cover the expenses associated with automobile and motor vehicle accidents and leave you with peace of mind so you can focus on recovery.
